If you want all the soil in your vineyard to be weed-free, you can have a towed duck-foot cultivator. If you want grass strips between the rows, you can have a pruning mulcher (also used for mowing grass and weeds). The decision depends on how 'strong growing' your land is and how much clay content. Vine growth in clay soil is relatively weaker than in a free-draining sandy soil.
If clay sticks to your boots (as it does in Burgundy) then it's nicer to have grass strips to walk on;
however, the vine growth is much weaker if you have grass strips, which is a big disadvantage in the first few years while the vines are establishing themselves.
