Different bottle top thread types:-
ROPP: Roll on pilfer proof - tamper evident, suitable for beverages or pharmaceuticals.
MCA: Variation of the ROPP, MCA2 and MCA3 variants are suitable for carbonated beverages.
ALCOA: Variation of the ROPP, 28 mm can be used with child resistant closure.
ROPP Deep: Roll on pilfer proof deep - BVS (see below for the detailed specification).
The bottle has to match the cap, so you need to choose the bottle first.
The most attractive sizes are Long-cap 28x45 mm or 30x60 mm, the 30x60 mm size is now the most widely used for wine bottles.
The original 30x60 brand 'Stelvin' is manufactured by the French company Pechiney (owned since 2003 by Alcan Inc) but there are 30x60 caps by other manufacturers. The Stelvin capsule is made up of a screw cap, a long printable skirt and a liner specifically designed for contact with wine.
The glass bottle used with the 30x60 mm cap must have a special BVS Neck Finish with a molded screw thread beginning at 2.8 mm below the neck top:-
- BVS finish: UK standard BVP-GME 30.13 / US standard US-GPI 1680-03
There are two types of liner, with different permeability of the seal:-
The cheaper Saranex 38 liner is made from layers of polyethylene, PVDC (polyvinylidene chloride) and expanded polyethylene. It is intended for bottles which will be
stored for up to one or two years.
The Saran Tin liner has a layer of tin sandwiched between PVDC, white kraft and expanded polyethylene. This tin layer means that it is much less permeable than the
Saranex liner and hence less oxygen enters the bottle. It is for wines that will be stored for longer periods of up to 10 years.
